About
Michelangelo designed the drum and the 16-ribbed dome. Giacomo della Porta completed the dome in 1590, and Carlo Maderno added the nave and facade in the early 1600s. The model shows the 16 pairs of drum columns, the lantern and gilt ball, two tall chapel cupolas, lower chapel roofs, and 13 facade statues. The facade faces east toward St. Peter's Square.
